Mark Owen

NBGI Private Equity

Mark is a Director of NBGI Private Equity. Unusually, he has considerable experience in both private equity and industry. After completing an MBA, he spent ten years working in industry in the US with Combustion Engineering, a diversified engineering and industrial services group, and Champion International, a paper and building products manufacturer. His jobs ranged from product management to general manager of a subsidiary company, and latterly he was part of an interim management team turning around underperforming subsidiaries.

He returned to the UK in the late ‘80s, joining Schroders Corporate Finance and running their private transactions team for five years. He got into private equity in 1994 when he joined Granville Private Equity Managers, leaving to set up NBGI Private Equity in 2000. Deals he has led include the Buy & Build up of Nationwide Autocentres, the MBOs of Walker Hamill and Ochre House, and the buy-out from administration of Jamies Wine Bars, Henry J Beans and Smollensky’s to form the Kornicis Group. Mark graduated from Selwyn College, Cambridge with a degree in chemical engineering and has an MBA from the Wharton Business School.
